Machakos University Partners with Stakeholders in an Ambitious Tree Planting Initiative
Machakos University took a significant step towards environmental sustainability on April 9th, 2024 by spearheading a tree planting exercise aimed at contributing to environment conservation and sustainability. In collaboration with Equity Bank, Kenya Forest Service and the Machakos County Government, the University launched a coordinated effort to address pressing environmental concerns.
The Vice Chancellor opened the ceremony with a warm welcoming remark stating that “at Machakos University, we prioritize environmental stewardship through initiatives such as awareness campaigns, training programs and community involvement in tree planting activities”. She also stated that the University was committed to setting up a tree nursery with key focus in planting indigenous trees conducive to the local area and community needs.
Dr. Christopher Gatama Gakahu, Machakos University Chairman of Council was the Chief Guest who presided over the ceremony. Speaking during the launch of the tree planting, Dr. Gakahu commended Equity bank on their corporate social responsibility geared towards learning institutions including Machakos University.
The proceedings of the ceremony commenced with a compelling lecture on clean energy, provided by Equity Bank. Subsequently, participants had the opportunity to ceremonially plant trees, symbolizing the dedication to a sustainable future. The initiative then transitioned to Maruba dam site, where 3,000 tree seedlings were planted with precision and care. Equity bank donated 2,000 tree seedlings to the University towards this environmental conservation initiative.
At the core of this endeavor lies Machakos University’s unwavering commitment to aligning its environmental initiatives with national objectives, particularly the ambitious goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032. By enhancing the green cover within the community, the University aims to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and foster a culture of environmental stewardship among its students, staff and the community.
Recognizing that environmental conservation is an ongoing journey, Machakos University pledges to continue planting and nurturing trees on a regular basis. The Vice-Chancellor extends a heartfelt appreciation to all staff, students and all stakeholders who participated in this landmark event.
The University has held similar tree planting initiatives over the years in support of the government’s agenda to increase forest cover across the country.
