On Saturday July 27th, 2024, Machakos University had the honor of hosting Her Excellency Pastor Dr. Dorcas Rigathi, EGH, in a sensitization forum for more than 3,000 high school students from 20 high schools as part of the preventive program against drug addictions.

Her Excellency, was warmly welcomed by Machakos University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joyce Agalo, along with the university management and distinguished members of the clergy. The event took place on the university grounds and marked a significant moment in the fight against substance abuse.

The Vice-Chancellor Prof. Agalo in her opening remarks, emphasized the severe consequences of addiction, including student dropouts, abusive relationships, poor health, strained family dynamics, diminished academic performance, and even suicide. She encouraged students to engage in extracurricular clubs and societies as constructive leisure activities and to acquire new skills to enhance their competitiveness in the future.

Her Excellency Pastor Dr. Rigathi addressed the clergy, urging them to extend their support to men and boys struggling with substance abuse, including those living on the streets. Her call to action highlighted the vital role religious institutions can play in providing a supportive environment for those in need. “I am committed to continuing affirmative action for the boy child, ensuring that men can live fulfilling lives, free from alcohol and drugs,” Pastor Dorcas affirmed.

The forum also featured insights from NACADA Eastern Region Regional Manager and other NACADA officials, who provided valuable information on emerging trends in drug abuse and strategies for managing addiction during rehabilitation, post-rehabilitation, and in cases of relapse. The event was a resounding success, reinforcing the collaborative effort needed to tackle substance abuse and showcasing the ongoing dedication of Machakos University and its partners to fostering a supportive and informed community.
